Deck Shades & Fabric Shade Structures

What is a deck shade?
It is an outdoor, roof-like structure that covers a seating area or standing area that otherwise would be exposed to continuous, direct sunlight. A deck shade protects homeowners, guests, clients, children, pets, or plants from the heat and the ultraviolet radiation of direct sunlight.

What is a deck shade cover made of?
It consists of a shade portion that functions as a roof. This canopy shade is made out of a special fabric that offers powerful tensile and tear strength. Because it is flame retardant, it is also heat resistant. A galvanized steel frame, stabilized by corner bracing and brass plates, supports the deck shade. Panels can be added as options to the side of the structure, and optional plant hangers can be installed on the shade as well.

Who needs deck shades?
Homeowners definitely need them because so many homeowners sit outside on some kind of patio or deck throughout the spring, summer, and early fall. Kids and pets will be much better protected from heat and ultraviolet radiation when sheltered by one of these solar shades.

Businesses can also use deck shades to cover eating areas, break areas, and gathering areas. Rather than constructing expensive outdoor break areas, a simply canopy and a few basic benches can create all the comfort that employees need to enjoy a break or a lunch hour outdoors.

Restaurants and bars can increase their businesses by making it safe and comfortable to sit outside on the patio under a custom sun sail fabric cover.

Deck shades can cover anything from a concession stand at a sporting event to the seating areas where the fans watch the game. Trade shows depend on shade canopies to keep their booth areas comfortable for visiting professionals. Street vendors near beaches or sidewalks can use deck shades to protect themselves and their customers from heat and sunburn. Playground deck shades also provide protection for small children.

What if I only use my deck for plants?
Any deck in your yard that has potted plants certainly needs a deck shade cover. You may have assumed that plants live in sunlight and are impervious to UV light. This is not the case. It all depends on where the plant is from. A good many plants that we grow for decoration grow in the wild in places like forests where the tree canopy above them blocks most of the direct sunlight. Still other species thrive in cold weather climates or parts of the world where it there are more cloudy, rainy weather than they are to sunny days.

It makes sense then that if some of our most attractive flower and garden arrangements are that sensitive to ultraviolet light; they need protection prolonged exposure to the sun using a custom patio canopy. They may not need it to the degree that humans do, but they need it nonetheless.

Any poolside area also needs a deck shade. Without it, the reflectivity of the water will increase the intensity of light and the sunburn it ultimately will cause. However, putting a shade over the both the seating area and the water will minimize both. Tanning areas still be done in areas off to the side where people can get just enough sun in control doses without overdoing it and hurting their skin.

Sun Shades & Shade Structures

Are sun sails cheaper than other types of shade structure?
Yes. In terms of cost per square foot, they are the most cost effective shade solution on the market.

Are sun sails as stable as other shade structures?
Yes. You don’t want your shade structure blowing in the time or collapsing in the middle. The tension force of the fabric keeps the sail tight across its surface. The perimeter of the structure curves slightly toward the center to help maintain tension. Meanwhile, the edges are reinforced by webbing that goes all around the perimeter of the shade. Stainless steel rings fasten to this webbing to evenly distribute tension all around. When mounted properly, fabric sail structures retain their shape in the wind without sagging, flapping, or wrinkling.

What are the benefits and features of sun sails?
There are benefits that directly relate to human health in the form of protection against skin cancer. Other benefits pertain to protection against property loss caused by heat buildup. Still others, such as comfort and peace of mind, are more less tangible, although by no means less important.

Just a few benefits of playground shade structures include:
  • Protect human and animal skin from the ultraviolet rays of the sun
  • Protects humans, pets and assets from heat damage
  • Sun sails can double function as protection against hail
  • Highly decorative sun shades create attraction factor for areas of interest
  • Can be mounted where full steel frame shade structures cannot be erected
  • Much more affordable than many other shade products
  • Can be used by homes, municipalities, schools, and businesses
  • Residential sun sail covers are easy to install
  • Designed to be maintenance free
  • Holds shape better than canvas and is resistant to mold and mildew
Where are sun sails used?
Sun sails are beautiful patio canopies and practical for a wide range of applications such as residences, swimming pools, auto dealers who want to highlight a special area of their store, parks, museums, etc. They can be adapted to awkward or unevenly shaped outdoor areas more readily than awnings, canopies or shade structures can be.

Companies can use sun sails as well to shelter employees who like to go outside on break. Parks use them to shelter picnic areas. Water parks use fabric sun shade structures as decorative covers over swimming pools. Many stores have mounted them over their entrances to attract and shelter customers with a flair of decorative protection. Parking areas can also be protected with sun sails so patrons do not have to touch hot steering wheels when they get into their vehicles to drive home.
Do you have many varieties of sun sails?
Oh yes. Call Easy Rack to see what color, size, and fabric material will work best for your home, business, school, or Municipal Park now.

Easy Rack also carries a wide variety of commercial shelving, material handling equipment, commercial lighting, new and used gondola shelving, used pallet racks, and modular prefab buildings installed nationwide.

Patio Shade Structures & Patio Canopy

Why does a playground need a shade?
About 80 percent of a person's total lifetime UV exposure occurs in the first 18 years of life. Without some type of playground shade structure, a child is going to get sunburned. It only takes 10 minutes for this to happen. One blistering sunburn, prior to 18 years of age, can double the risk of a child eventually developing melanoma.

Without consistent playground shade covers, approximately 25 percent of all children who are under 6 years of age, and approximately half of all children who are under 13 years of age, will be sunburned to the point of blistering. Tragically, these statistics currently result in approximately 1 out of every 5 children in the United States growing up to suffer from (and often die) from some form of skin cancer later in life.

We have heavy cloud cover in our part of the country. Don’t the clouds block UV light?
No. 80 percent of UV radiation still reaches the ground. Keep in mind that only a fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum is visible to the human eye. Even on what appears to be a very dark day, the sun is still there, above the clouds, and UV light is still coming down on us. Patio shade structures prevent this kind of UV exposure.

What benefits do Easy Rack playground shades offer schools and parks?
Outdoor play areas are cooled down and protected from up to 95 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet light. This so drastically improves safety for school children that it directly contributes to the educational cycle, because with fewer painful sunburns, there will be fewer trips to the nurse for treatment. Also, severe cases of sunburn that often result in kids being sent home will be prevented.

Won’t these structures make our playground look odd or unattractive?
No. Easy Rack playground fabric sun shade structures are designed with aesthetics in mind. We can provide you with any number of styles, sizes, and colors that will compliment your school or park facility.

Can any other type of business use these structures?
Yes. Hospitals and outdoor athletic facilities also use playground sun canopies. Many hospital patients actually need to go outside for fresh air, provided they are stable enough to walk and travel to and from their beds with doctor supervision.

However, these people DO NOT need to get sunburned on top of whatever else put them in the hospital! Consider a hip n ridge shade structure to prevent this from happening.

Athletic facilities rely on playground shades to protect players and fans. The decorative nature of their design contributes the sense of festivity and ball in play.

Do you have playground shades for specialty parks and other public areas?
Easy Rack offers both standard and custom designs to specifically accommodate a number of very special activity centers. Municipalities use our playground double shade sail covers to protect their amusement parks, water parks, and zoos. Any area around water will have a higher incidence of sunburn due to water’s reflective capability, and zoo animals suffer just as much as humans do because UV radiation breaks down ANY type of animal cell—not just human.

What features, advantages, and benefits do playground shades by Easy Rack offer
  • Maintenance free
  • Reliable, permanent structures
  • All sorts of colors and sizes to choose from
  • Powder coated steel frames
  • Made in the USA
  • Comprehensive warranty
  • Able to withstand winds of up to 80 mph

Patio Canopy & Shade Structures

What is a patio canopy?
It is an outdoor, roof-like structure that covers a seating area or standing area that otherwise would be exposed to continuous, direct sunlight. Patio canopies or shade structures are intended to protect homeowners, guests, clients, children, pets, or plants from the heat and the ultraviolet radiation of direct sunlight.

How large are these sun shades?
Patio canopies are made to fit almost any standard patio. Common dimensions include 12’ x 10’, 12’ x 20’, and 12’ x 30’ shades.

What is a patio canopy made of?
The shade portions that works like a roof is made of a special fabric that features superior tensile and tear strength. Due to its heat resistance, it is also flame retardant. The frame that supports the outdoor shade structure is made of 16 gauge 2 3/8” galvanized steel with exceptional stability maintained by corner bracing and brass plates. Optional plant hangers are available upon request, along with shade panels for side protection.

What types of patios need a canopy?
Any garden patio that is home to plants needs shelter from UV radiation. While you may assume that all plants are tough and thrive in direct sunlight, this is certainly not the case. Many plant species grow in forests where the tree canopy above them blocks the majority of direct sunlight. Other species deliberately hug vertical surfaces that provide shade for the majority of the day. Still other species in cold weather climates are far more used to cloudy, rainy weather than they are to sunny days.

Some of these produce some of our most attractive flower and garden arrangements, and due to their sensitivity, need almost as much protection from UV rays and prolonged exposure to the sun as human skin requires.

Any poolside patio can use a fabric sun shade structure. This is because the water’s reflectivity will increase the intensity of light. A shade over the both the seating area and the water will minimize direct exposure to the sun. Tanning areas can be set aside where people can control the amount of time that they lay out in the sunlight

What organizations need patio canopies?
Any home with an outdoor seating area can benefit from one of these amazing awnings, canopies or shade structures. Kids and pets with sensitive skin will certainly do better with UV protection they provide. Businesses can save a great deal of money on building outdoor break areas simply by erecting a sun shade over a few benches or outdoor lounge chairs.

Everything from concession stands to seating areas at sporting events will benefit from shad structures as well. Trade shows depend on patio canopies to keep booth areas comfortable, and a wide range of other business that merchandise products or services near beaches or sidewalks also depend on sun shades to provide protection from heat and sunburn.
