Easy Rack shelving units are available in every sizes and industrial grade strength.  They can be used to store almost any item or container that has a flat bottom surface.  A shelving unit’s ability to balance a load is equally important is its ability to support a load.  The majority of 18 gauge and 20 gauge steel systems will easily support 400-450 lbs in weight.  In order to determine which model to purchase, you should calculate the total height, width, and girth of the items you will be storing.  The wider the crate or box, the wider the shelf should be in order to evenly balance and distribute the weight.  The best place to install a shelving unit is usually right next to a warehouse or stockroom wall; preferably at the intersection of a corner so one side of the unit has additional support from the second wall.  Some shelving units are so large that they can cover an entire wall and turn unused vertical cube space into storage space.  Other very compact models can by office personnel and management store paperwork and office supplies.

When storing very heavy equipment, parts, or heavy crates, Easy Rack recommends one or more industrial strength shelving units.  Heavy duty shelves are designed to organize and maintain inventories of large machine parts stored in crates and large metal containers containing chemicals or other supplies.  As a general principle, always overestimate the amount of weight capacity you will need for heavy duty storage.  Shelving units can and will become unstable if their weight capacity is inadvertently maxed out by workers in too big of a hurry who stack a few items too many on the shelf.  The biggest danger here is not so much the shelves themselves buckling downward under the weight, but the system becoming top-heavy and prone to tip forward. 

Another point to consider is whether to invest in an open backed shelving unit or a closed backed model.  If the system is to be placed against a wall so employees can retrieve items from the front, a wide span or closed back commercial shelving unit offers maximum stability by resting part of its weight against the wall and minimizing the risk of tipping.  If the items being stored are not that heavy, however, and the risk of tipping is minimal, an open backed shelving unit offers the greatest convenience for retrieving from the front, back, or sides of the unit.  Open backed shelves are most common in assembly line environments where a team of people has to retrieve smaller parts from a series of storage compartments continually throughout the day. 

Consider also that shelving dimensions refer to the total LXWXH measurements of the steel components, not the actual interior storage space.  Talk to a material handling specialist first to see exactly how much cubic space you will need in your new shelving unit.  It might be necessary to purchase the next size up, or arrange for a custom unit to be built, in order to fully meet your material storage and handling needs.
