Aluminum Loading Dock Ramps

It may be unrealistic for you to install a permanent loading dock in your facility due to the current recession. A more economical alternative to concrete, permanent docks is one or more aluminum loading ramp(s). Aluminum loading ramps are built to be both stable and portable, and can provide all of the functionality of a full-sized permanent dock at only a fraction of a cost.

You might have heard that only steel ramps are sturdy enough for heavy loading dock operations. This is a myth. Aluminum ramps are designed to handle both heavy payloads and human foot traffic. In fact, they can handle the same amount of weight as their steel counterparts--approximately 16,000 lbs to 30000 lbs. You can safely drive fork lift trucks up these ramps into trucks and operate a remote shipping yard or construction site just like a warehouse loading dock.

Even though aluminum is a lightweight metal, it can be reinforced to enable it to safely support high weight capacities. This combines the benefit of a relatively light ramp that is highly portable with a structural durability that can reliably withstand a beating during heavy productions times.

Heavy duty strength is not the only advantage you receive from an aluminum loading ramp. A number of key safety features are built into aluminum loading ramps that make them safe for workers to walk over while pulling pallet racks or carrying materials by hand. A 1 ½ʼ curb provides guidance up the ramp and prevents pallet rack and forklift roll offs. It is also important to keep the ramp from swaying to one side or the other while workers are walking up the incline. Safety chains anchor the ramp in place to keep it fixed in position. Rubber shock absorbers underneath the aluminum ramp prevent heavy loads from bouncing it up and down. Diamond-shaped grating on the surface of the deck provides extra traction for wheels and work boots, making the surface more slip resistant in rainy weather.

Because aluminum loading ramps and equipment are used so much in remote locations, it is also important that the by highly mobile. Portability, therefore, another key benefit you can expect to add to your rail yard or construction site with these remarkable tools. Because they are much lighter than steel equivalents, they can be pulled much more easily behind a fork truck attached to a tow bar that can be optionally attached to the ramp at the time of manufacture. They are also light enough for one worker to adjust manually by means of a hand-crank hydraulic pump that raises or lowers the ramp into position.

Dock Plates

What are dock plates?
Dock plates are lightweight loading dock ramps designed to be very portable and easy for one person to position. Their primary function is to provide a bridge for non-powered material handling equipment such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, platform trucks, and dollies. Some can support weights of up to 12,000 pounds, but they are NEVER to be used for a forklift or any kind of motorized vehicle support.

Are dock plates the same as dock boards?
Dock plates look similar dockboards and also work as bridges between the surface of an elevated loading dock and the back of a trailer car. However, dock plates are designed only for hand-operated handling tools that are dock boards. Dockboards are heavy duty loading ramps that are usually made from steel. They are designed for forklift and other motorized vehicle traffic to and from the surface of an elevated dock.

Are dock plates steel or aluminum?
Easy Rack Dock plates are manufactured made from diamond deck aluminum that is extra strong and helps prevent water, oil, debris, and snow from piling up on the plate. Diamond deck aluminum provides traction for both work boots and pallet jack wheels, and it makes the unit a great deal sturdier. Aluminum dock plates are easy for one person to handle because of their light weight. For manual positioning, it is best that you use an EZ-Roll to wheel the plate into place. When you are using a forklift to position the unit, you can wrap safety chains around it that allow it to be lifted, moved, and lowered into place.

How do I determine what weight capacity I need?
To determine the correct weight capacity, add the weight of your largest material handling device to the maximum load you will be transporting. Find a dock plate whose weight capacity exceeds this total amount. This is a common sense precaution against possible overloading on the part of workers in a hurry. People do not always pay attention to how many items they stack on a hand truck or pallet jack, so it is always a good idea to use a dock plate that is stronger than what is apparently needed.

How do I select the correct dimensions?
To determine dock plate width, add 8” to the total overall width of the load and equipment. For example, the most common sized pallet is 48” L X 40” W. Adding 8” to the width determines dock plate size to be 48”. This calculation works with both hand trucks and pallet jacks regardless of the materials loaded. Length calculation is a bit more complicated. Each dock plate has what is called a “maximum height differential” that refers to the difference between the maximum height of the loading dock and the truck floor. The shorter the board is; the more limited its use. The longer the board, the greater the number of dock applications it can be used for.

Do you have used equipment?
Yes. In fact, anything you find on our website we can locate in good, used condition. Used aluminum models can save companies up to 40% on their purchase cost. Steel dock plates can be obtained as well per special request.

Heavy Construction Equipment

Easy Rack knows customization is the key to safety, ergonomics, and success. There are so many different types of applications for heavy construction that the need to specialize and customize fork trucks, masonry tools, and skid-steers almost always presents itself on the job site.

Forklift Accessories
Forklifts attachments are OSHA compliant heavy construction equipment that turns forklifts into loading platforms. Standard safety platforms enable the forklift to reach over obstructions too high for scissor lifts and other heavy construction equipment. They provide much wider platforms than boom lifts, and they can be lifted more rapidly than scaffolding.

Skid-Steer Loading Products
These products let you customize your loading into a specialized piece of heavy construction equipment. Scoop and mix concrete mixers allow you to scoop up sand and gravel in the bucket position, then rotate for in-place concrete mixing. Hoppers are designed to clear debris from construction sites and landscaping projects. Root grapples and grapple buckets help landscaping crews to clear and prepare properties for a new look.

Masonry Construction Equipment
Easy Rack Masonry Equipment for Heavy Construction saves time and money for the time. Tools such as Mortar Buggies are an excellent way to move mortar into areas that cannot be accessed by forklifts. Brick Carts and Block Carts often save companies as much as 80% on labor cost to move brick and block. Nesting Forklift Mortar Tubs are easily to move, and they can be stacked stored with your forklift.

Heavy Construction Equipment Forks
You can equip your forklift or your skid-steer with many types of forks. Forks get damaged to the point that they need to be replaced. Easy Rack carries replacement forks in brick, block and general purpose styles. Each style is specially designed for the designated purposes. Over the bucket forks allow you to use your skid steer vehicle like a forklift. Another add on for your skid-steer is the fork frame attachment with bright red fork tips clearly visible for safety reasons, and a heavy duty tapered backstop that keeps the forks from swinging when picking up very heavy or odd sized loads.

Tow/Load/Haul
Heavy construction equipment often has to be moved by an individual worker. In order to make this as ergonomic as possible, special tow, load, and hauling tools are strongly recommended, especially when moving heavy construction equipment that is bulky or manufactured with disproportionate dimensions. Load and tows reduce customer wait time, cut labor cost by helping workers get the job done in less time with little or no need for overtime, prevent back injury, and reduce damage to equipment. Ramps and steel loaded pins allow for easy and safe transportation via fork truck.

Easy Rack is your "One Stop Shop" for all types of forklift equipment and heavy duty construction equipment.

Edge Dock Levelers

When do buildings need dock levelers?
Whenever they do not have docks that match the height of today’s truck. Over the years, trucks have become much taller. Standard beds average a height of 52-53” and refrigerated beds range from 54-55”. Older buildings may have docks as low as 45”-49” and require some sort of dock leveler equipment to facilitate fork truck traffic from the dock to the truck.

What is an “edge of dock” leveler?
An edge of dock leveler attaches to the side of the dock, extending its range by 5” vertically and 5” horizontally. This means that if a dock is 49” in height, an edge of dock unit can enable it to access trucks measuring 54” in height. They are much more economical than pit mounted loading dock levelers, which have to be embedded in the concrete itself and represent a considerable cost for a retrofit.

How does an edge of dock leveler work?
When a truck backs up to the EOD leveler, two rubber bumpers stop it in precisely the right position. The ramp is then into position with a tool known as a ratchet riser. This bridges the distance between the dock equipment and the bed of the truck so forklifts, fork trucks, pallet jacks, and workers can cross over. With refrigerator trucks, it is normally necessary to install a refrigerator lip on the edge of the ramp to extend it an additional three inches into the truck bed.

What is the difference between a lo-dock leveler and an edge of dock leveler?
A lo-dock leveler is a factory add-on that increases the height differential of an edge of dock unit. In some older buildings, the dock height is significantly less than that of today’s modern trucks. Buildings that were built in the 40’s and 50’s may have docks as low as 45”-48”. The problem with using an edge of dock leveler alone is that it will only add 5” to this height—an insufficient amount. For buildings like this, Easy Rack can arrange to add a lo-dock leveler to an edge of dock unit. Such a unit can then add up to 11” total to any dock height, effectively overcoming the 5” limit of standard edge of dock levelers.

How much weight can an edge of dock leveler handle?
Most edge of dock levelers will handle capacities between 20,000 and 25,000 pounds. Many are manufactured with a self-storing handle that makes them easy to position by pulling the handle to the dock floor. The latch assembly activates the lip forward to the floor of the trailer when the handle is lifted, and the handle automatically returns to the stored position when it is released. Edge of dock levelers include bumpers and bumper blocks and can be custom manufactured in widths of 72” and 78” per request.

Yard Ramps

What is a yard ramp?
It is a type of loading dock ramp that allows a forklift to enter a shipping containers or truck trailer in from a facility that lacks an elevated loading dock or it allows a forklift to move from an elevated dock onto the ground. Pneumatic wheels on the ramp allows it to be moved into place by fork trucks, and hydraulic pumps built into the unit enable workers to position it at the precise height of a truck trailer bed, rail car, or loading dock.

What features to Easy Rack yard ramps have?
All commercial ramps (both dock to ground and ground to truck) are manufactured with an all steel welded construction. Weight capacities vary from 16,000 to 60,000 pounds and a wide range of length and width sizes available. Serrated grating gives the ramp excellent traction and prevents water, snow, oil, grease and miscellaneous debris from building up. The lower end approach plate provides maximum support and smooth transition onto the ramp grating surface. Heavy-duty formed steel side girders provide main load-bearing capability, and deep side members prevent forklift runoff.

What are yard ramps used for?
Yard ramps are essential for any warehouse or factory that was built without an elevated dock ramp. They allow work crews to bridge the gap between the building and the trailer and safely move supplies off the truck by forklifts. This is much more convenient, quicker, and more cost effective than unloading and loading containers by hand. In other cases, however, the reverse may be true. A building with a large outdoor stockyard may require a forklift to move from the loading dock onto the ground to either retrieve or organize supplies outdoors. This is often seen in shipyards and rail yards, and it requires a dock to ground ramp to allow vehicles to safely move from the dock to the yard.

How do I know what size yard ramp to choose?
The size of the ramp you purchase will depend upon a number of factors relative to the weight of the heaviest forklift and the heaviest load being moved along the ramp. Easy Rack recommends you select a unit that is three times the rated capacity of the lift truck it supports. Rail yards require a 36’ unit that includes a level off. Standard dock to ground units typically measure 30’ straight. When deciding on the width of the yard ramp to use, it should always be 15” wider than the widest equipment moved along its surface.

Can yard ramps be customized?
Yes. In fact, we recommend that any organization working multiple shifts and who are moving a wide variety of material types and equipment contact a specialist to discuss additional components that can be used to increase the stability, safety, and functionality of these units. These customization options include, but are not limited to, safety chains, ramp clamps, and tow bars.

Dockboards

Loading ramps are metal boards and plates that bridge the gap between a building or dock and a truck bed. Mobile loading ramps are used in every industry and in every market place. They are common in agriculture, military factories, building, warehousing, and distribution. They are designed to make loading and unloading of trucks as fast and as safe as possible. Some loading ramps are designed specifically for rail cars, but the majority of these ramps are made for trucks and trailer beds. In certain situations, specialty loading dock equipment such as wheel risers and steel platforms may also need to maximize safety and process flow.

Dockboards
Dock Boards are loading ramps that bridge the gap between the dock and the truck to make loading and unloading safe. Dockboards are designed to handle power equipment like fork trucks. They have curbs on the sides to prevent vehicle runoffs and to provide additional structure and capacity. Because they must support vehicles as well as products and workers, most models are made of heavy duty steel, although Easy Rack also supplies lightweight aluminum models when appropriate and necessary. Capacities range from 6,000 to 40,000 lbs.

Dock Plates Aluminum
A / B Plates made are manual loading ramps made from high grade "diamond deck" aluminum. Although they closely resemble dockboards, never confuse the two. Aluminum dockboards or dock plates are designed for hand trucks and pallet jacks only.

Edge-of-Dock Levelers
These loading ramps are designed for high use docks that were originally constructed without pit mounted levelers. They are ideal for fork truck traffic that is from 5” below dock level to 5” above dock level. LTL and truck traffic also go much faster with levelers in place. Molded bumpers and a mechanical spring operation take the heavy work out of the lifting. This unique design also helps ensure the unit is correctly positioned each time it is used.

Steel Yard Ramps
These loading ramps are used for loading trucks from the ground, either because there is no truck high dock present, or because there are more trucks than docks. Yard ramps are portable and can be towed with a forklift. A hydraulic pump allows the height of the yard ramp to be adjusted, and deep side members prevent forklift runoff.

Mini Loading Ramps
These loading ramps offer an economical solution when the target height is ½ or less that of normal dock heights (generally 33” or less). Capacities start at 12,000 lbs and range upward. The mini ramp can be ordered with an optional mobility package that eliminates the need for a hydraulic actuated undercarriage to move the unit. Minis can be used with manual equipment and fork trucks. Capacities start at 12,000 lbs with standard and custom sizes available.

Hook & Apron Walkramps
These aluminum loading ramps are designed for foot traffic, hand trucks, and pallet jacks moved by hand. Standard lengths run from 3' to 16'and two widths of 29" or 39".

Wheel Riser Dockboards
If the dock is too high for incoming trucks, wheel risers fit under truck wheels so the bed can be positioned properly above dock for safer and faster loading.

Steel Dockboard Platforms
Steel dockboard platforms allow facilities to enlarge their dock areas installing platforms incrementally one at a time or by ganging them together to expand dock space significantly.

Dock Levelers

Easy Rack Dock Levelers
Dock levelers provide movable, vertical ramp platforms that can be raised and lowered to create a level surface between the loading dock and the interior of a truck trailer. A dock leveler must be stable and able to handle extremely heavy loads. Because trailer beds can vary extensively in size, dock levelers have to be able to reach a variety of heights, and they must also provide a stable platform that provides traction for material handling equipment, personnel, and odd-sized or cumbersome loads.

Truck Actuated Dock Leveler
The Easy Rack Truck Actuated dock leveler can easily support up to 20,000 lbs. of materials and supplies. It features a lift bypass feature that helps prevent damage to obstructions and doors, and it also features an automatic return to cross traffic. You can customize this dock leveler upon request. It can be ordered with weather stripping if you plan to use it outdoors. You can also have it built either with legs or without leg, depending on where you plan to use the device. Additional weight capacity can be built into the unit as well, with strengths ranging from 30,000 to 80,000 lbs.

Mechanical Dock levelers
The Easy Rack mechanical dock leveler is a durable, rugged piece of material handling equipment that is engineered and designed for minimum maintenance. It is ideal for truck loading and unloading, and can handle loads of up to 50,000 lbs. in weight.. The mechanical dock leveler features a smooth operation controlled by a recessed chain that releases the deck and allow it to raise up.

The unit itself is made from heavy duty steel. It features a ¼” checkered plate deck rated at 55,000 PSI. A 6” industrial strength steel under structure supports the platform and contributes to its exceptionally long life. It also comes with telescopic steel toe guards on both sides that are flush with the platform edge, and the lip itself measures 16” long. The mechanical dock leveler delivers a service range 12” above and below dock. For additional stability and safety, it includes with 2 laminated bumpers

Electric Hydraulic Dock Leveler
This unit is engineered with state of the art hydraulic lifting at the push of a button. If your facility has an exceptionally busy dock, we recommend that you purchase this unit because of its speed, reliability, and exceptional weight capacity. When the operated depresses the “raise” button, the hydraulic pump raises the deck and extends the lip. Once the electric hydraulic dock leveler is at the desired level, the operated releases the raise button and deck descends to the trailer bed. When the truck pulls away, the deck descends to full down position, trips the limit switch and returns automatically to the level support cross traffic position.

The Easy Rack electric hydraulic dock leveler can be ordered in 1 phase or 3 phase power options. The unit includes 2 laminated bumpers and a control box with a red emergency stop button. This is the most powerful unit available in our stock, capable of handling up to 80,000 lbs. in weight.

Aluminum & Steel Loading Dockboards

Aluminum dockboards are designed to connect dock floors to the back floors of trailers and offer a safe, economical way to load and unload trucks. Dock boards have safety curbs on either side of the ramp that prevent material handling tools from rolling off the sides while loading and unloading trucks. Aluminum dock boards offer a lightweight, yet sturdy bridge between dock and truck and are manufactured in full compliance with all OSHA regulations. They are a must have for every shipping and receiving department that routinely man handles heavy loads and uses loading ramps.

The size of your commercial dock board will depend on the height differential between trailer and the loading dock itself, and the width and axle capacity of your forklift, pallet rack, hand truck, or platform truck. To save a step, call an Easy Rack loading dock experts and provide this information over the phone. Our material handling specialists will help you determine the size of the aluminum dockboard best suited to your needs.

Aluminum Dockboard with Welded Aluminum Curbs
A well made dockboard is engineered and built for maximum safety while handling heavy forklifts and loads. Locking legs prevent them from moving during loading and unloading operations. Welded aluminum safety curbs prevent accidental falls and provide a visible driving lane. The locking legs are unevenly placed, allowing the dock board to sit canted while not in use. This makes it easier for forklifts to pick it up. These dock boards are manufactured in compliance with OSHA. The bend measures 11° and 9" from the edge, and the legs are 12" from the edge.

Aluminum Dockboard with Steel Curbs
This dockboard combines maximum strength, safety, and portability. Its deck is made of tough aluminum tread plate and features structural steel safety curbs with tapered ends. The beveled design of the edges allows for smooth entry and exit, and the tread plate design ensures positive traction. Legs are 12” from the edge and are bolted to give the unit increased durability. Legs are also canted for fork truck portability.

Formed Aluminum Dockboards
This dockboard features unique, formed aluminum side curbs that combine the benefits of strength and lightweight portability. The tread plate offers better traction, and the side curbs are painted safety yellow. As with other dockboards, beveled entry and exit edge offer convenient and smooth movement across the surface.

Aluminum Hand Truck Dockboard
This dockboards is lightweight and can be carried and positioned by hand. It can bear up to 800 pounds of weight and can be used with two wheel hand trucks. Total plate thickness of the unit measures only 3/16”. Its welded aluminum, diamond tread surface, and beveled edges provide safe and smooth entry and exit. The bend in the surface is intended to keep ramp edges flush with the surface of the dock and with the dock floor. Each unit is equipped with bolted, locking legs. In order to decrease the chance of roll off, full length aluminum curbs line the sides of the unit.

Truck Loading Ramps

When consumer goods are being transported to customers, truck drivers often will find themselves in need of a truck loading ramp. While many commercial trucks and trailers have some type of lifting system, it still makes the whole loading or unloading process a much more tedious affair. By comparison, a truck loading ramps from Easy Rack, can be stored inside your truck or kept on site to allow the trailer to be fully loaded or unloaded without a dock.

There are a variety of different designs of truck loading ramps available. When using a forklift truck or pallet jack you will need a loading ramp that offers a gentle incline to make it safe and manageable to move heavy items onto and off the truck. Aluminum loading ramps with midway supports are very effective for use with this type of equipment. This lightweight metal has enormous strength, and under most circumstances is much more rigid than steel. Aluminum loading ramps are also light enough to be manipulated into place by a single person. This means that the driver of the truck or his assistant will be able to manage the loading and unloading process if absolutely necessary.

When you are choosing the right truck loading ramps for your business, safety should always be your min concern. While some companies offer cheap truck loading ramps, these are generally of a much lower quality, and are made from poorer materials without the levels of safety consideration given by a more established manufacturer. Often, low quality loading ramps are not equipped with side rails or decent support structures underneath them, and this will increase the risk of a collapse in use, as well as making it more likely that a user will run off the side of the ramp when in use.

Easy Rack carries a wide variety of loading dock levelers, hitch lifts, loading dock ramps, & dock boards, commercial shelving, material handling equipment, commercial lighting, parking lot lighting kits, tennis court lighting packages, athletic field sports lighting, used pallet racks, Christmas lights, and modular prefab buildings.

Loading Dock Equipment, Dock Levelers, Loading Dock Seals, Gantry Cranes & Affordable Material Handling Supplies from Easy Rack.

The loading dock is the place where your business meets the rest of the world, and where the products that your staff has invested time and energy in finishing and preparing are handled before being dispatched. The loading dock is where the rubber meets the road so to speak. It is the one place in your business where assets collect, and the place where accidents are most likely to occur. Back injuries can most definitely be prevented with proper material handling procedures and quality loading dock equipment from Easy Rack.

The weather is one variable that can have a major impact on the safety of your employees and the loading dock equipment they use. If a dock is exposed to the elements, then moisture can cause the floor to become slippery where staff can slip and where accidents are more likely to happen. By incorporating a commercial grade dock seals & shelters around the loading door area this will prevent any water or wind to be a factor and make it much easier to get the trucks loaded and unloaded in poor weather.

A variety of different cranes and gantry cranes are available including a number of high capacity jib cranes that can be used to raise heavy items into place before being swung onto the back of the truck. No matter what kind of loads you are planning to transport, having the right kind of dock equipment to carry the weight of the items you are loading is essential.

Easy Rack are experts in providing material handling solutions for the whole production process, and the dispatch area is no different, so no matter what the products are that you are loading or unloading, there is equipment available that can make the process much more straightforward and safe.
