Storage Shelving

Storage shelving units enable facility managers to convert unused space into valuable storage and organization space. Workers complete tasks faster when they can access materials quickly, safely, and easily. Companies often find these results in a significant reduction of man-hours and the elimination of overtime hours. Storage shelving also can potentially convert sufficient vertical cube space into storage space that a facility that was previously overcrowded now has plenty of room to continue operating, and the need to relocate no longer exists. Keeping overhead at a minimum and helping companies avoid the expenses of moving are just two examples of how storage shelving units can generate a tangible return on investment for organizations that invest in them.

Storage shelving systems can be used for storing almost any item or container that has a flat bottom surface. The bulk of our 18 gauge and 20 gauge steel wire shelves can easily handle 400-450 lbs in weight. Weight capacity is not the factor to consider when making a purchase, however. It is equally important to balance the load you are storing as it is to support the load. Otherwise, storage shelves can become imbalanced toward the front and tip over during use. To prevent this hazard, calculate the total length, width, and height of the total items you plan to store. The wider the crate or box, the more physical shelf area you will need to evenly distribute the load.

Easy Rack used commercial storage shelving is available in open backed models and closed back models. Both bring specific benefits to different environments and tasks. For smaller items that do not weigh very much, open backed systems provide plenty of support and allow workers to retrieve materials from the front, back, or even the sides of the shelves. Open back storage shelving is often used inside offices to store file boxes containing invoices, tax documents, and employee records. They are ideal for storing office supplies when you run out of closet space, or for storage in portable buildings that have no closets. Closed back shelves or custom made shelving are more stable because they partly rest against the wall. This reduces the risk of tipping and also helps conserve floor space.

If you intend to store very heavy crates, machine parts, or heavy containers, it is vest to overestimate the amount of weight capacity you will need and invest in an industrial strength storage shelf, rivet shelving or a wide span system. Employees may not be aware of the amount of weight already stored on the unit, and they may inadvertently add more materials than the unit can handle. This often happens when people are in a hurry. Industrial shelves are designed to minimize the risk of tipping, but overloading them will cause them to bow in the middle and reduce unit lifespan. Planning ahead will prevent this from occurring. When calculating weight capacity, always purchase storage steel shelving that allows room for growth and allows for contingencies and human error as well.

Also, please be aware that shelving dimensions refer to the total L x W x H measurements of the steel components, not the actual cubic storage space. As in the case of weight capacity, it may be necessary to purchase the next size up to give your facility the cubic storage you need for all of your materials. You can also call an Easy Rack material handling expert and look into having a custom unit built along to special dimensions.

Cantilever Shelving

Cantilever shelving both new and used will allow you to store any awkwardly proportion or especially long materials like tubing and pipe safely and conveniently. It is extremely valuable when it comes to converting unused floor space into functional storage space. Cantilever shelving also helps maintain a safer, less cluttered work environment. You will never again have use the floor to store dry wall, metal sheets, or pipes that create trip hazards and present obstructions to workers and fork trucks.

Another advantage you receive from cantilever shelves is the organizational improvements they can contribute to your process flow. With the correctly proportioned cantilever racks, any number of products that normally defy category and easy storage can be segregated and compartmentalized for quick inventory and retrieval on demand. The improvements this efficiency will make will prevent you from losing money on needless overtime and mistakes in inventory and stock selection. Although these returns on investment may at first appear at intangible and nebulous, they are nevertheless absolutely real and will over the course of time pay for the equipment itself.

Cantilever shelves differ considerably from traditional shelving systems and pallet racking systems. Instead than supporting a flat surface with a traditionally designed frame, cantilever shelves uses vertical uprights and adjustable arms that reach outward. Cantilever uprights and arms will either extend horizontally at a straight 90 degree angle to the upright, or they will angle slightly upward in order to cradle certain materials. Generally speaking, flat items like dry wall are stored on the horizontal arms, and longer, cylindrical materials are stored on arms that angle up to prevent roll off. Knowing which type of uprights and arms to use in your cantilever rack requires first deciding exactly what you plan to use it for. It also requires some calculation of weight load and distribution which either simple math or a phone call to an Easy Rack expert can help you quickly determine which used pallet racking system is good for you.

Because uprights and arms are sold individually, larger cantilever shelves are custom creations of our clients. They are reconfigured systems we have available that are designed for light and general storage needs. If you are going to build your own custom shelving out of cantilever supports and arms, it is important to follow four general principles in determining exactly which items you will need to create a medium duty or heavy duty storage system for your warehouse or factory.

1. First, determine overall weight capacity for the system by dividing the total amount of weight you will store by the number of arms you plan to order. You must install enough arms to evenly divide individual proportions of the load that are equal to or less than the total weight capacitance of an individual cantilever shelving arm.

2. To determine the strength and number of uprights you will need, again divide your total weight by the projected number of vertical support to make sure that the divided weight is equal to or less than the total capacity of the piece. Never allow the weight on a single cantilever arm to exceed the weight capacity of a vertical upright. To do so would put stress on the entire system.

3. Also make sure that the depth of the load never exceeds the length of the cantilever arm. If it does, the cantilever arms are pulled forward and the shelving unit can potentially tip forward.

4. Finally, divide the total product length by the total number of arms, and then divide the product again by two. This determines the total overhang of your equipment on either side of each arm. Without the proper degree of overhang, the arms will be stressed or the cantilever shelf will become horizontally imbalanced.

If you do not have time to do all these shelving calculations, or if you simply do not like math, call us and let us do it for you. We specialize in building custom cantilever shelves for virtually any storage need. We design cantilever shelving systems according to precise load size and weight, and we ensure the correct allowance for vertical clearance. We will also recommend, when necessary, additional necessities such as guide rails and entrance guards that will protect equipment and material from damage.

Cantilever racks offer industry professionals a powerful material-handling tool that requires no external bracing and is easy to install.

Cantilever racks offer construction and industry a powerful material-handling tools that requires no external bracing. A cantilever rack features either single upright or double upright design that allows for storage of oddly shaped materials or supplies with exceptionally long measurements. Easy Rack supplies medium duty and heavy-duty cantilever racks to construction and storage facilities nationwide. We carry used models for contractors on a budget and new cantilever racks for purchasing managers who insist on having the very best up front.

Cantilever racks offer more use of the vertical cube and help reduce the costs of expansion and moving. Their specific value lies in their ability to store items that cannot be stacked or easily organized in crates or shelving. Many furniture warehouses them to accommodate bulky and cumbersome pieces. Industrial facilities use them to store everything from pipe to tubing. Appliance manufacturers use them as well to store refrigerator and freezer units. Cantilever racks can sit back against the wall with arms extended, giving easy access to manual loading or forklift maneuvering and do not a separate aisle or special access point to reach. Easy Rack's sells a wide range of builds and dimensions engineered for different storage needs and load capacities. We carry medium-duty and heavy-duty models in over 30 specific dimensions.

Medium and heavy-duty cantilever racks feature single-sided uprights. All racks offer a great deal of durability because of a powder coat finish that makes them very tough under hard working conditions. Medium-duty units can be hand or forklift loaded, and heavy-duty cantilevers are ideal for heavy materials that require the use of forklifts. Our unique manufacturing process combines welded steel components with unique bolt construction, allowing these units to bear loads of up to 9000 pounds and customize to varying lengths by moving the arms to different levels and securing them in place with a key lock. All arms feature lips that prevent stored materials from falling on the floor or worker's feet.

Single-sided uprights customize easily to a number of individual shelving applications. Double-sided uprights allow for faster manual loading and forklift access. Many facilities use them for temporary storage, placing longer items such as pipe, tubing, bar stock and lumber securely on the uprights and out of the way for workers moving back and forth within the facility. One cantilever rack can store many different types of items because of the adjustable nature of the arms. Easy Rack's cantilevers measure up to 10 feet in height and can bear load capacities of up to 9000 pounds. We sell uprights and arms separately, not in pairs, so customers can choose exactly how many arms they need per unit. We also custom build systems for clients who call in with specific requirements.
