If the items being stored are not that heavy, however, and the risk of tipping is minimal, an open backed shelving unit offers the greatest convenience for retrieving from the front, back, or sides of the unit. Open backed shelves are most common in assembly line environments where a team of people has to retrieve smaller parts from a series of storage compartments continually throughout the day.
Consider also that shelving dimensions refer to the total LXWXH measurements of the steel components, not the actual interior storage space.
