Industrial Hose Reels

Commercial hose reels are one of the best material handling investments you can make. A great deal of the heavy machinery that you use requires pressurized water or air to operate. Some of these devices also require exceptionally high voltage power that can be delivered only through very large diameter, heavily insulated power cords. Because such hoses are very heavy and cumbersome to lift and carry, it is not advisable from a safety or ergonomics perspective to carry, extend, and retrieve them manually without an industrial hose reel.

It only takes 25 lbs of force applied at the wrong angle to injure a workerʼs back, which is a liability you do not want. Also, dragging hoses around the floor or across a construction site will eventually wear on the hose and lead to replacement costs you shouldn'tʼt have to waste more money on.

Industrial hose reels eliminate the risk of injury and damage to heavy industrial cords and pressure hoses with large diameters. Commercial hose reels are manufactured and sold in different sizes based upon the size and nature of the hose or cord they are being used for. They are further divided into four categories based upon the retraction mechanism they utilize to retrieve the hose after use. Because it takes one hand to guide the hose onto a commercial reel, category selection should be based upon workload, ergonomics, and type of industrial environment the hose reel is used in.

Hand Crank Hose Reels
When an employee has both hands free, one hand can crank the hose onto the reel, and the other hand can guide it. Generally these reels are designed for long, large capacity industrial hoses with up to 4,000 PSI.

Motor Driven Hose Reels
Motor driven reels are used with hoses ranging from 200PSI to 10,000 PSI and are recommended for environments where the worker has only one hand free to guide the hose onto the spool.

Spring Driven Hose Reels
Spring driven models do not require an external power source to operate. Easy Rack carries spring driven industrial reels for air hoses, oil hoses, grease hoses, hydraulic hoses, vacuum hoses, and oxy acetylene hoses. We also have spring driven cable reel for welding equipment in both stainless steel and aluminum models.

EZ-Coil Commercial Hose Reel
These spring driven commercial hose reels retract at only 20% the speed of other spring driven models. They are intended for use in combustible environments it is unsafe to operate a motor or electrically driven hose reel for risk that a spark may cause an explosion.

Electric Cord and Cable Reels
These commercial reels are engineered specifically for retractable Extension Cord Reels, Hand Crank Welding Reels, and Static Discharge Grounding.

Because there are so many models available in each industrial hose reel series, it is important to narrow your selection and buy a unit that is the closest match to your requirements. The following five principles are recommended when making your selection.

We also suggest that you follow the following guidelines when selecting an industrial hose reel products for your facility.

1. Choose your reel based on hose I.D., O.D., and Length
2. Compare the size of your hose to the inlet and outlet sizes on the reel.
3. Decide on the safest and most ergonomic method of retraction.
4. Determine where to mount the hose.
5. Choose the type of hose you will be using.
6. Customize your commercial hose reel.

Even after choosing what you think might be a near perfect match to your industrial requirements, it may be possible to customize the hose reel further to meet the exact specifications of your process flow. Ask a material handling specialist at Easy Rack to see what customization options are available, or to make certain you have decided on the safest, most ergonomic, and most efficient hose reel possible.

High Pressure Hose Reels

Many industrial cutting operations and manufacturing tools depend on pressurized water and air for power. To maintain a consistency in air or water pressure, it is necessary to keep hoses in optimal condition. Dragging hoses over the ground, around corners, and around obstructions is never recommended. Hoses can become kinked and cause a drop in pressure, effecting safety and performance. They can also be damaged very easily when they are drug behind workers like this, and this only complicates a budget with needless replacement costs and downturns in process flow. High pressure hose reels are a much better way to transport and operate air and water high pressure hoses.

High pressure air hose reels will preserve the longevity of hoses and will make it easier for workers to do their jobs. Machinery that relies upon compressed air or water will also perform much better when a consistent pressure is maintained throughout the operation. Safety in your facility will also improve, because high pressure hose reels are engineered to systematically and efficiently retrieve hoses after use, so workers to do not have to retrace their steps and laboriously wind up the hose by hand after completing a task.

Because of the diversity of high pressure hoses that are used in industry, the type of hose reel you choose depends on a number of very key factors that you should pay very close attention to. Without the proper “fit,” the reel will not effectively store, transport, or retrieve the hose, and damage or injury could result.

When choosing a reel, the size, length, and type of hose weight heavily upon your selection. Hose retraction method and the mounting position of your high or low pressure hose reel also play an important rule. As a general rule, you always want to select a high pressure hose reel with a little more space than you require. This makes retrieval faster and easier, and the extra disc space actually acts as a protective shield on either side of the hose.

The type of retraction method used by your high pressure hose reel is also a very important consideration. If your workers already have their hands full operating machinery or material handling tools, a motor driven or spring driven hose reel is preferable. Spring driven reels are ideal for facilities with large power bills and high overhead. Spring driven reels can automatically rewind high and low pressure hoses without a power source. The operator can guide the hose smoothly onto the reel with one hand. Motor driven reels use an AC, DC, Air, or Hydraulic power source and again require only one hand to guide retraction. When a person has both hands available, and when working in an area without a convenient power source, a hand crank air hose reel works just as well, provided there is an operator with two free hands to crank the reel and guide the hose back onto the reel.

Most factories mount their air hose reels horizontally, on the floor. In fact, most material handling companies ship air hose reels pre-configured for floor mounting. However, the same configuration can be used to mount the reel on the ceiling, and vertical wall-truck mounts can also be ordered from Easy Rack for special operations or uniquely designed facilities.

Easy Rack will also further customize your high or low pressure reel to meet your exact requirements. Once you select your reel type, we can also provide you with different add-on features such as roller brackets, special mounting brackets, carry handles or a cart for portability.
